How to Prepare for Blood Tests

Preparing for blood tests is quite easy if you follow simple instructions. If you are using a home test kit, then follow all instructions on the packaging and consult a pharmacist if you have any questions. These home test kits are quite simple to use, but do not hesitate to ask for help if you need it. If your blood test is administered at a health care clinic, then adhere to a few simple guidelines to ensure that your test is accurate.

  1. First: Follow all instructions

Your may need to test your blood for a variety of reasons. Your doctor may need to know that a particular medication is working properly, or test for a major or minor illness. At times, a patient is required to fast for several hours prior to the blood getting drawn. Get both oral and written instructions as to what you can and cannot eat and drink (including water) hours before the testing is done. This is crucial to ensure that your test results are accurate.

  2. Second: Ask questions about the test and medications

Once you are given oral and written instructions as to what you can eat and drink in a particular time frame, ask about any medications that you normally take. Should you stay on your regular schedule or skip a dose of your medication prior to the test? Also ask about the procedure itself. What is the process of drawing blood? If you ask these questions, you feel more at ease and comfortable about the blood test. Ask questions and if necessary, write them down before the blood work starts. Take on the role of your own health advocate.

  3. Third: Stay positive

A positive outlook is the key to relaxation. Do not worry about what the tests may or may not reveal. Simply relax your mind, take a few deep breaths, envision yourself happy, healthy and whole and stay positive.
